Joseph Kony and the Kony 2012 Movement

Kony 2012

Joseph KonyIn March 2012, Facebook and Twitter users began to spread the word about Kony 2012.  Hashtags and posts showing support for this campaign started to take over, with most directing viewers to watch the video released by the Invisible Children campaign. Within 24 hours, the video and cause went viral, which has given the campaign what they wanted: to make a single man famous for what he is doing to children and innocent citizens.

But who is the man that is getting all of this attention? His name is Joseph Kony and he is the leader of one of the worst gangs in the world. He power comes from the use of innocent children, who have been kidnapped and trained to fight for him, as well as his belief that he is a messenger of the Holy Spirit and is allowing spirits to work though him to complete tasks.

Who is Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army?

Joseph Kony is a guerrilla group leader from Uganda who is the leader for the LRA, or Lord’s Resistance Army. Kony claims to be a Christian leader, however his perception is warped by his violent actions against children and other citizens of Uganda. As a man who believes that he is the sole messenger for the Holy Spirit, Kony and his army captures children from the country to fight for his goal of domination, work as a laborer, and to be offered as a sex slaves to his leaders as a reward for completing certain tasks.

The goal of Kony and his followers is to establish a Ten Commandment-based government in Uganda. To help reach this goal, they have captured over 60,000 children and forced over 2 million citizens from their home. His army has been released into the country with orders to murder, rape, mutilate and even commit cannibalism against the innocent citizens of Uganda. With most of his army being children, the Invisible Children campaign was formed to stop Kony from terrorizing citizens as well as robbing these children of their childhood innocence.

In 2005, Kony was found guilty of War Crimes by the International Criminal Court. He has evaded capture, even after President Obama sent 100 U.S. troops to Uganda to train the armed forces in the country on how to capture Kony and restore peace to the country.

The Invisible Children

The Invisible Children campaign is an international plan of action to handle the problem associated with Kony in Uganda as well as offer relief, support and assistance to those that have been affected by the actions of the LRA.

In 2012, the Invisible Children campaign released a 30 minute video titled “Kony 2012” that explains the issue in Uganda and calls for an immediate call-to-action response from celebrities, government officials, and citizens of the world to come together and support the capture of Kony. The video, which was posted and shared on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and other websites went viral after release and has been viewed several millions of times.

The Goal of Kony 2012

The goal of Kony 2012 is to make Joseph Kony famous for what he has done to innocent children and citizens, which in turn should prompt immediate attention by armed forces and government agencies to advance their mission to capture him. The Invisible Children campaign clearly proclaims that by making him famous, we are not making him a celebrity to which praise and admiration should be given. The goal is to increase the exposure of what a madman he is and how innocent parties are being affected by his beliefs.
