How to Get Rid of Dandruff Fast

Dandruff is a common skin condition that affects roughly 50 percent of the population. Dandruff is often due to a dry, irritated scalp and appears as white flakes of skin that are most noticeable around the top of the hairline. The flakes often fall out onto the persons clothing when they shake their head or brush their hair. Dandruff may clear up within a week or so but can take longer and may recur due to stress or bad dietary habits. Here are a few suggestions about how to get rid of dandruff using natural and commercial remedies.

Make an Appointment with a Doctor

The first thing to do is determine if it is just a case of dandruff or a more serious condition such as eczema or seborrheic dermatitis which causes dandruff-like symptoms but appears in areas around the face including eyebrows, nose and the backs of the ears. Treatment for dermatitis often involves an anti-fungal shampoo such as Nizoral or prescription-strength formula containing steroids used by dermatologists.

Apple Cider Vinegar Treatment

People use apple cider vinegar as a rinse to keep the hair and scalp healthy. The acidity in the vinegar helps loosen the dead skin flakes that stick to the scalp and keeps the hair shiny. Lemon juice and water infused with rosemary are alternate substitutes for the apple cider vinegar. Shampoo the hair and rinse well. Pour 2 cups of apple cider vinegar or one of the substitutes over the hair and massage into the scalp. Let sit for five minutes and rinse with cool water.

How to Get Rid of Dandruff Using Dandruff Shampoos

Dandruff shampoos such as Head and Shoulders contain zinc pyrithione, which is an anti-fungal agent that kills the bacteria that contributes to dandruff and dermatitis. Other types of dandruff shampoos contain coal tar, salicylic acid and selenium sulfide, which help to slow the shedding of the skins cells to help control the dandruff symptoms. Massage the shampoo into the scalp and let sit for five minutes before rinsing. Shampoo the hair two to three times per week until flakes disappear. It may take several weeks for symptoms to disappear and experimenting with different shampoos may prove more effective.

How to Get Rid of Dandruff with Natural Remedies

Several popular home remedies include treatments with infusion oils such as lavender and rosemary, apple cider vinegar rinses, and shampoos containing Tee Tree Oil. Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer for the scalp. The oil loosens the flakes and a good shampooing will help remove them. Frequent shampooing and good personal hygiene lessens the appearance of dead skin cells.

There is no miracle cure for dandruff but there are ways to discourage it. Poor diet, bad hygiene, stress, chronic illness, immune system deficiencies, and excessive sweating worsen dandruff symptoms. Diets rich in Vitamin A, B and essential fatty acids are not only healthy, but also beneficial to the hair and skin. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting proper nutrition helps keep symptoms from recurring.
