An ultrasound technician is a healthcare professional that works alongside a doctor to provide ultrasounds to patients. There’s no doubt that the ultrasound technician has been an asset to the healthcare world, but what do these professionals do? What does it take to become one?

An ultrasound professional is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing ultrasound equipment. They usually work in a hospital setting around patients and alongside other healthcare providers. An ultrasound technician will operate the ultrasound equipment, render images or moving video, and provide a doctor with this data so that he/she can make an educated diagnosis.

The good news is that the process needed for anyone learning how to become an ultrasound technician is not hard or complex. There are many different education/training paths that an aspiring ultrasound technician can take to finally land a job.

One of the most common routes that people who are learning how to become an ultrasound technician take is through education at a community or technical college. These types of schools generally offer quick two year Associate’s degrees in the areas of ultrasound technology and sonography. In some cases, these types of schools will offer shorter training programs that will eventually award a student certification rather than an Associate’s degree. Although a certification might not sound appealing, it is often enough to land a person employment soon after graduating.

Some four year universities offer programs in ultrasound technology, and they also tend to be more in-depth. The student aspiring to excel and move up in their ultrasound career would probably benefit the most from this type of degree.

Hospitals have also been known to offer training programs that precede employment in this area. If this type of opportunity presents itself, this is probably the best case/opportunity for anyone who wants to get into the field as quickly as possible.

On a lighter note, the salary for an ultrasound technician is pretty rewarding. In May of 2008, the median salary for ultrasound technicians was $61,980. In the 50% range of salary earned by ultrasound technicians across the board, the range was $52,570 and $73,680 in 2008.

Anyone who has learned how to become an ultrasound technician will be the first to tell you that it is certainly not difficult. It often requires a lot less than what many other similar careers in the same salary range would. If it’s at all possible, the best case scenario would be to take training from a hospital that precedes guaranteed employment. However, if this isn’t possible, don’t rule training out of your possibilities. Becoming an ultrasound technician is a very rewarding experience.
